Aewol Handam Coastal Walkway is a must-visit spot for family trips in Jeju. Stroll along Gwakji Beach, enjoy the clean sea, basalt rocks, and wind turbines—perfect for making memories with your loved ones.
Aewol Handam Coastal Walkway had been on our bucket list even before our Jeju trip began.
Despite the cloudy weather, walking here with my family let us fully enjoy the unique charms of Jeju’s sea. Starting from Gwakji Beach, we followed the path surrounded by blue waters, striking basalt rocks, and plenty of laughter from the kids. Here are some of our favorite moments.
Where does the Aewol Handam Coastal Walkway begin and how should you walk it?
The Aewol Handam Coastal Walkway connects Gwakji Beach and Aewol Port, stretching about 1.2 km. It's part of Jeju Olle Trail Route 15.
We started from the Gwakji Beach side, keeping the ocean on our right. The overcast sky meant no strong sun—perfect for a refreshing walk in the cool air.
The beauty of Gwakji Beach and basalt rocks—ideal for families with kids
The walkway is lined with crystal-clear waters and dramatic black basalt rocks. Along the way, small sandy beaches pop up, where our kids happily played in the sand and dipped their feet in the sea.
Adults could relax and admire the view, while children freely explored and enjoyed themselves. It was a satisfying experience for the whole family.
Gwakji Jamnyeo-gil: Discovering Jeju's Haenyeo Culture
About halfway along the path, you'll find the "Gwakji Jamnyeo-gil" sculpture. It’s a symbolic spot introducing Jeju’s haenyeo (female divers) culture, perfect for sharing the island’s heritage with kids.
We took photos at the sculpture and read the signboards together, learning about the history of the haenyeo and local marine life.
Wind turbines over the sea: Jeju’s exotic scenery along the trail
In the distance, you’ll spot wind turbines rising above the ocean, adding a unique touch to the view. The harmony of nature and technology creates an unforgettable scene, full of Jeju’s distinctive atmosphere.
Even in cloudy weather, the sight of the turbines shrouded in mist and the sound of waves made us feel Jeju’s authentic spirit.
Where nature meets history: Janghanchul Trail segment
Part of the Handam Walkway overlaps with the “Janghanchul Trail.” This area commemorates Jang Hanchul, the 18th-century castaway whose story is part of Jeju’s history. Walking here, you can experience both local nature and history. The path is easy and flat, suitable for all ages.
A walkway you’ll want to revisit—a healing trail for the whole family
Aewol Handam Coastal Walkway is beautiful in any weather, always offering a different side of Jeju’s charm. From the ocean and basalt to sandy beaches and precious family memories—if you’re planning a family trip to Jeju, this walkway is truly a must.
I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to feel Jeju’s nature up close with their loved ones.
